Introduction
Former UMC chairman John Hsuan once noted, "We must attribute
UMC's strong growth to the efforts of its employees and the
support of the community. In addition to rewarding employees'
efforts, as a public company, UMC must also fulfill its social
responsibility by giving back to the society." Since
its establishment, UMC has specified in its long-term operation
guidelines that the company will make every effort to contribute
back to society in addition to focusing on its business growth.
UMC's Candle Light Society, voluntarily formed by UMC employees
in 1992, has acted as a bridge between UMC employees and charity
groups to provide financial support and volunteer work.
In 1996, UMC established the UMC Science
and Culture Foundation to systematically sponsor and participate
in numerous activities in education, art and culture, sports,
public interest, and environmental protection.
Theses two groups within UMC complement
each other. The Candle Light Society provides a list of charity
groups to UMC and establishes a convenient donation channel,
while UMC Science and Culture Foundation provides assistance
whenever needed. UMC's external activities in public interest
areas are also promoted by Candle Light Society members within
UMC so that more UMC employees can participate and give back
to the underprivileged.
UMC
Science and Culture Foundation
Purpose of Establishment
UMC Science and Culture Foundation was established in 1996
following a donation from UMC of NTD 50 million,. Its purpose
is to promote Taiwan's culture, advocate academic exchange,
support technology growth, represent the minority, combine
hi-tech education with humanity education, improve quality
of life, and advance the harmony and health of the society.
Operating Focus
UMC Science and Culture Foundation focuses on five areas:
education, art and culture, sports, public interests and environmental
protection. UMC has put forth great efforts in holding activities
such as collaboration development with colleges, long-term
education assistance, art and culture promotion and sponsorship,
UMC's scholarship and others such as including college basketball
tournaments. In 2005, UMC launched the "Spreading Hope"
program by providing NTD 50 million annually, approved by
UMC's board of directors, to provide education assistance
and tutoring services for children from mid-to-low income

Candle Light Society
Purpose and Introduction
Date of Establishment: January 1992
Structural Change of Candle Light Society: The organization
began with a head, a supervising committee, and an administrative
committee (handling finance, secretary, administration, and
publicity issues), followed by five teams: a resource recycling
promotion team, a public interest activity promotion team,
a voluntary service team for Lux Mundi Home for the Severely
Retarded, a fundraising and activity planning team, and an
urgent calamity case aid and investigation team. Candle Light
Society was restructured in 2000 to meet the busy demands
of hi-tech industry personnel, who may not have the time to
volunteer but would like to contribute financially. Now, Urgent
calamity case investigation is performed by senior members
and volunteers in all fabs, fundraising is done by selling
charity tickets at UMC's e-store portal, public interest activity
promotion is done by HR employees in conjunction with other
public interest groups, and a resource recycling area is set
beside the main gate of UMC's Headquarters.
Milestones:
| 1992: |
Establishment of the
society. During the first five years, main activities
were fundraising, visiting charity groups and urgent calamity
case aid and investigation. |
| 2000: |
When UMC completed the
consolidation of its five joint venture companies, Candle
Light Society merged with USC's (a UMC JV company) voluntary
group to become an even larger organization with increasing
numbers of members and volunteers. In addition to original
tasks (fundraising, visiting charity groups and urgent
calamity case aid and investigation), Candle Light Society
pays more attention to providing easier ways for employees
to participate in charity work, such as establishing and
online donation database, a charity bazaar involving all
fabs and others. |
| 2002: |
Since 2002, Candle Light
Society has collaborated with UMC Science and Culture
Foundation in promoting a series of public interest activities
during UMC's annual anniversary in May. |
|
2005: |
Candle Light
Society reorganized a voluntary service team for Lux Mundi
Home for the Severely Retarded and collaborated with UMC
Science and Culture Foundation in promoting the "Spreading
Hope" program. |
| 2006: |
In response to the fundraising
held by Common Wealth Magazine Education Foundation's
"Reading for Hope" program, Candle Light Society
sponsored four elementary schools in Hsinchu and Tainan.
|
| 2007: |
Candle Light Society
recruits volunteers in UMC to promote reading in rural
areas. At the same time, Candle Light Society attempts
to attract more employees with various other activities.
