Public Interest and Volunteer Work



 

Education and aid to minority groups are important considerations at UMC. In addition to long-term sponsorships, UMC announced at its 25th anniversary on May 21st 2005 that the day would serve as UMC's public interest day each year. UMC hopes to help society in multiple ways by encouraging its employees to participate in voluntary community work.

UMC's activities in public interest areas promoted over the years include "Building the future together for our children" (collaborating with World Vision Taiwan), sponsoring school tutoring services for children from mid-to-low income families (conducted by Boyo Social Welfare Foundation) and fundraising to help Bluesky and Good Shepherd Social Welfare Services build shelters for dropouts.

Major activities in recent years:

Since 2005 Employees' fundraising and UMC's donations combined more than NTD 6 million for Boyo Social Welfare Foundation in promoting schoolwork tutoring services for children from mid-to-low income families and building classrooms.
2005 UMC employees originated a fundraising activity that collected NTD 3.03 million in two weeks for casualties of the South Asia Tsunami. The fund was distributed to World Vision Taiwan, Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, the Red Cross Society of the R.O.C., Eden Social Welfare Foundation and Dharmar Drum Mountain Foundation for the rescue purposes.
2005 Establishment of UMC voluntary teams, which have had more than a thousand people participate in ever since. Major voluntary work in recent years include:
(1) Humanitarian voluntary team: Implement "Spreading Hope Camps" to help children from mid-to-low income families build positive thinking through sports, environmental protection education and movies.
(2) Reading for Hope voluntary team: In addition to collecting books for schools in remote areas, the team also called UMC employees to read for other children as well as their own. Reading promotion activities for elementary schools in remote areas began in 2007.
(3) Volunteer service team for Lux Mundi Home for the Severely Retarded: Provide assistance to compensate for an insufficiency of social workers.
2004 Collaborating with World Vision Taiwan on "Building the future together for our children" program to support schooling for 1,263 children from mid-to-low income families.
2004~ Fundraising for Aere Typhoon victims, total fund of NTD 3.8 million was collected and distributed to Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, World Vision Taiwan, and Wu Feng Junior High School for rebuilding destroyed areas.
2003 Donate 12,000 N95 masks to hospitals that treated SARS in Hsinchu and Tainan during the SARS epidemic period.
2002 Raised NTD 2.5 million to help Bluesky and Good Shepherd Social Welfare Services to build shelters for dropouts.

January 2001 A multi-fab bazaar to raise money for earthquake victims in West India.
2001 Weaving and pottery equipment was donated by Candle Light Society to help victims from the 9/21 earthquake
December 2000 Annual fundraising held by Candle Light Society raised NTD 3.26 million in 20 days for Catholic Hua Kuang Social Welfare Foundation, St. Joseph's Center for Special Education, United Way Taiwan, Puli Christian Hospital and Lux Mundi Home for the Severely Retarded.
Since 2000 More than 10 charity groups have participated in UMC's fab bazaars since 2000, including the Development Center for the Spinal Cord Injured, Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, Private Hsian-Yuan Memorial Institute, St. Joseph's Center for Special Education, Genesis Social Welfare Foundation, Eden Social Welfare Foundation, Taiwan Fund for Children and Families, Ananda Marga Welfare Foundation, Taiwan Association for of Family Caregivers, St. Raphael Opportunity Center, Tainan and other charity groups.
2000 NTD 5 million was collected by the "921 Hope Project" conducted by Candle Light Society.
Since 1999 Continued to support building the campus for St. Joseph's Center for Special Education. UMC also helped shoot the video to raise money. UMC paid for the building of three classrooms, and donations from UMC were more than NTD 2.5 million.
1999 UMC donated NTD 200 million to Taichung County and Nantou County governments for reconstruction work after the 9/21 earthquake. Donations from UMC employees reached NTD 20 million, while employees also continued to provide full financial support for 10 children through the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families in those areas.
Since 1999 After the 9/21 earthquake, Candle Light Society continued to financially support 10 children through the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families in Nantou. Since 2001, For five consecutive years, Candle Light Society has arranged an annual gathering for their members and those children who are supported.
November 1998 NTD 1.5 million was collected in a single day for United Way Taiwan.
Since 1997 UMC and Farmer Bank (now known as Taiwan Cooperative Bank) jointly launched a credit card. Part of every expense by this credit card was donated to Genesis Welfare Foundation, United Way Taiwan and Lux Mundi Home for the Severely Retarded.
1996 ~2005 Provided scholarship of NTD 350,000 for members of the Sunshine Foundation in Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli.
January 1995 "Candle Light Fund" was established with the purpose of A. Donations for charity groups, associations and foundations. B. Aid for urgent calamity cases.
October 1994 NTD 1 million was collected through Candle Light Society for the College of Medicine, Tzu Chi Univeristy.
1994 Books were donated by UMC employees to Jian Shih Township for children and teenagers as their after-school readings.
Mid-Autumn Festival 1993 Collaborating with United Daily News, UMC gave away free recycled bags on Mid-Autumn Festival in Hsinchu.
Since 1993 UMC set up scholarships in many schools including St. Joseph's Center for Special Education
1993, 1996, 1998 Continually promoted the idea of bone marrow and organ donations.
1993, 1994 Continually promoted used apparel donations.
1993, 1994 Donations to Genesis Social Welfare Foundation. UMC's voluntary workers also helped care for the patients.
1992 Establishment of Candle Light Society. UMC's voluntary workers provided services on holidays to Lux Mundi Home for the Severely Retarded, St. Teresa's Center and other charity groups. Bazaars have been held by Candle Light Society over the years.
