2009 Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes
(DJSI) Component
UMC has been selected as a global component
of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for the second
consecutive year, following DJSI's 2009 annual review. UMC was
listed for both the DJSI-World and DJSI-Asia Pacific indexes
this year. DJSI-World 2009 chose 2,608 global enterprises for
evaluation, with 317 enterprises selected as global components.
Only six semiconductor companies were selected globally. |

CSR Report Wins 2009 Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Report
Gold Prize
UMC won the 2009 Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Report Award
gold prize for its 2008 corporate social responsibility (CSR)
report. It was the second time UMC has earned this honor in
recognition of the industry-leading quality, thoroughness, and
transparency of its report. This achievement also illustrates
that UMC's disclosure of CSR and sustainable development information
fulfills its commitment to transparently communicate with stakeholders.
The award is yet another honor for UMC following the company's
GRI G3 A+ verification, and is the first CSR report in Taiwan's
semiconductor industry to be verified by a third-party. |

UMC
First to Announce Carbon Footprint Verification on Integrated
Circuit Wafers
UMC announced that it has completed the foundry industry's first
reported carbon footprint verification for integrated circuit
wafers produced at its facilities. UMC conducted carbon footprint
inventory on its 200mm wafers at the company's Fab 8A according
to international carbon footprint standard PAS2050, with the
results receiving third party verification by Det Norske Veritas
(DNV). UMC is the only semiconductor company in Taiwan that
independently calculates, verifies, and reports carbon footprints
for its products. |

UMC
Completes Environmental Production Declaration for Its Integrated
Circuit Wafers
UMC announced that it has completed the EPD (Environmental Production
Declaration) verification for integrated circuit wafers produced
at its facilities. UMC conducted EPD on its 200mm wafers at
the company's Fab 8A following international standards ISO 14040,
14044,14025 and IC PCR, with the results receiving third party
verification by Det Norske Veritas (DNV). DNV is an accredited
verifier that is recognized by EPD system Sweden. |

2008 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report Verified by
DNV
UMC announced verification of its 2008 corporate social responsibility
(CSR) report by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), demonstrating that
the report conforms to GRI G3 application Level A+ and fulfills
requirements of AA1000AS 2008 (AccountAbility 1000 Assurance
Standard (2008)). This verification by DNV demonstrates that
the content, information and data of the report are true and
accurate. UMC is the first semiconductor foundry in Taiwan to
receive third-party verification for its CSR report, which is
published on the company's public website. |

Corporate Social Responsibility Award" by Global Views
Magazine
Global Views Magazine awarded UMC with the corporate social
responsibility (CSR) Model Award in the hi-tech category. Global
Views Magazine has issued this award since 2005, and grades
companies according to Oekom Research standards that evaluate
social performance, environmental performance and financial
information disclosure. UMC was the only semiconductor foundry
among the 13 overall winners, demonstrating the company's widely
recognized achievements in environmental protection, corporate
governance and social participation. |

Board, Singapore (Fab 12i)
MAXA represents the highest global standards in manufacturing
innovation and excellence. It is a celebration of manufacturing
and the outstanding operations in Singapore. The Award partners
are the Economic Development Board (EDB), McKinsey & Company
and the Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA). |
