UMC is a world-leading semiconductor foundry that manufactures
advanced process ICs for applications spanning every major
sector of the semiconductor industry. Founded in 1980 as Taiwan's
first semiconductor company, UMC is the foundry technology
leader, receiving more semiconductor patents than any other
Taiwanese company in both Taiwan and the U.S.
Cutting-edge Foundry
Technologies
The company's cutting-edge foundry technologies
enable the creation of faster and more powerful chips to meet
today's demanding applications, including copper interconnects,
low k dielectrics, embedded DRAM, and mixed signal/RFCMOS.
UMC was the first foundry to ship wafers using copper materials;
the first foundry to produce chips using 90-nanometer processes;
and the first foundry to produce chips on 300-mm wafers. UMC
provides open access to these technologies in response to
the needs of the latest generation of IC designers.
The Industry Leader
UMC was the first semiconductor company
to list on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in 1985. The company's
listing on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2000 was
the largest Asian IPO in the history of the exchange. UMC
employs approximately 12,000 people worldwide, and over 60%
of the employees have advanced degrees. With offices in Taiwan,
Japan, Singapore, Europe, and the United States, UMC has an
extensive service network to meet the needs of their global
clientele. In addition, customers may also access complete
supply chain information online through the MyUMC
online service portal, an industry first when it was introduced
in 1998.
