UMC to Buy Back 400 Million Common Shares

The Board of Directors of UMC approved a resolution to implement a treasury share system at its December 22 board meeting. The company plans to buy an estimated 400 million common shares for use as stock options. The share purchase is expected to take place between December 27, 2000 and February 26, 2001.
