UMC Receives ICP Certification from the Bureau of Foreign Trade

Hsinchu, Taiwan, December 26, 2012 - United Microelectronics Corporation (NYSE: UMC; TWSE: 2303) ("UMC"), a leading global semiconductor foundry, today announced it has been certified by the Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) as a qualified ICP (Internal Control Program) exporter. The certification signifies that UMC can now apply for multiple-shipment SHTC export permits with a valid term of three years.

Mr. ML Liao, vice president at UMC said, "The fact that we passed strict ICP authorization illustrates UMC's successful efforts to establish an effective export control mechanism. In the future, we'll be able to streamline the complicated SHTC export process, and to minimize the risk of exported products been misused or breaching regulations through strict system management. This will create efficiency benefits for both UMC and our customers."

As a foundry leader, UMC serves customers globally, with strict compliance to international exporting regulations over many years. The company has established a corporate export policy statement, implemented an ICP system, and continually pursues improvement at the operational level. The restricted parties screening system which was developed in-house, is the first in the industry, and the screening scope includes the restricted parties lists announced by BOFT and the European Union, in order to set the internal control standard to an even higher level.
