UMC Again Earns Top 10 Ranking for Corporate Citizenship by Taiwan's CommonWealth Magazine

HSINCHU, Taiwan, August 8 , 2014 - United Microelectronics Corporation (NYSE: UMC; TWSE: 2303) ("UMC"), a leading global semiconductor foundry, today announced that it has again achieved a top-10 ranking in CommonWealth Magazine's Corporate Citizenship Award. J H Shyu, senior vice president at UMC, received the award on behalf of the company at the Regent Hotel in Taipei today.

Mr. Shyu commented, “We are pleased to again receive CommonWealth Magazine's Citizenship Award. With our continuous efforts, UMC not only received today's honor, but has also been listed as a Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) stock component for six consecutive years, and is the first Taiwanese company listed on CDP's Climate Performance Leadership Index. These achievements demonstrate that UMC’s long-term effort on corporate sustainability has been well recognized. Looking ahead, as a leading global foundry, we will continue practicing corporate social responsibility to redouble our efforts and leverage our influence to promote a virtuous social cycle.”

The judges recognized UMC for its outstanding performance to enhance corporate awareness by establishing a corporate culture of charity service and creating 6 social participation projects, listed below:

  1. Let Hope Grow – Caring for disadvantaged children, and promoting life education, reading habits, and green concepts.
  2. Green-tech Talents – Developing internal talents’ ability, and holding semiconductor manufacturing training courses at universities and high schools. UMC experts in various fields lectured young students about semiconductor manufacturing to cultivate semiconductor talent.
  3. Promoting Healthy Work Environment – Caring for employees’ and their families’ health, and conducting activities to promote psychical and mental health.
  4. Public Welfare Investment and Volunteer Program – Sponsoring children from remote areas to reading programs, and volunteering for activities involving children care.
  5. Arts promotion and Community Relations– Sponsoring radio programs, hold annual company-wide art festivals, and support EPA and NFA with training by UMC’s hi-tech fire brigade.
  6. Volunteer Cultural Inheritance–Training new volunteers to carry on cultural inheritance efforts. In 2013, UMC employee’s accumulated volunteer hours have increased by 85%.

 

The 2014 CommonWealth CSR Award references international indexes and measuring methods such as the United Nations Global Compact, the OECD’s Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, and the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes. All the data scored and ranked was according to the following 4 main indicators: Corporate Governance, Corporate Commitment, Social Participation and Environmental Protection.
