As the COVID-19 epidemic affects countries around the world, UMC's caring for the Earth has never stopped. We continue to work with our supply chain partners to support the promotion of ecological conservation activities. The 5th Eco Echo Award started on April 22, 2020, Earth Day, and provides a total prize of NT$ 3 million. For this event, we will call for projects with outstanding contributions to environmental and ecological conservation, and inspirational youth environmental action plans.
The Eco Echo Award enters its 5th year, benefiting environmental conservation for all of Taiwan The Eco Echo Award enters its 5th year in 2020. It has supported a total of 19 large ecological conservation projects that benefit all areas throughout Taiwan. The contents of the projects are diverse which include animals and plants, such as whales and dolphins, eagles, clownfish, white fish, land crabs, butterflies, fireflies, carnivorous plants, etc.; various types of ecological environments, such as coastal wetlands and inland wetlands; and environmentally-friendly agriculture that supports coexistence with the environment, such as golden carbon rice. The Eco Echo Award has become one of the important promoters for the ecological conservation work in Taiwan. In the time of changing natural ecosystem and society, many young volunteers who are enthusiastic about environmental protection find out different ideas for the sustainability of the Earth and think of many possibilities for the development of clean, green and pollution-free technologies. Through the Eco Echo Award, these hard-working conservation stories can be heard. It is hoped that this event can bring influence and promote the work of ecological conservation, which is the most positive contribution from UMC to the environment.
UMC, through the Eco Echo Award, works with suppliers to implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) In 2015, the United Nations proposed 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) as guidelines for companies to carry out corporate social responsibility; among them, Item 14 is marine ecology; Item 15 is land ecology; and Item 17 is global partner. UMC uses the Eco Echo Award as a platform, through the influence of the enterprise, to support ecological conservation together with the supply chain partners, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations. This year’s Eco Echo Award was supported by 8 corporate partners, including 3M, Hueng Luei Process Industry, Hermes Epitek, Faraday Technology, Edwards Technologies, Wholetech System, Formosa Sumco Technology, and Tokyo Electron. We hope to consolidate everyone's strength and expand our influence, helping more people to work together for a better world.
The 5th Eco Echo Award for education cultivation, inviting youth to put their environmental actions into practice In addition to keeping the tradition of "Calling for Large Environmental Conservation Projects" over the years, the 5th Eco Echo Award also held the "Youth Environmental Action Award" last year for the first time, discovering outstanding youth who care about the environment and voluntarily share their ideas and actions. Candidates of this year's Youth Environmental Action Award will be evaluated based on the focus of sharing, practice, and change, and more friendly review criteria will be implemented for final assessment. It is hoped that more youth with dreams and passion would be encouraged to participate in public welfare.
