On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets. People of different backgrounds spoke for the earth together. This day became the first Earth Day, and the awareness of environmental protection began to rise in people's mind. This year is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. After half a century, we have seen that actions have indeed brought about changes. Although the COVID-19 epidemic has affected our daily life, UMC’s initiative in taking full actions will not stop.
This year is the first year that the Paris Agreement officially goes into effect. In conjunction with Earth Day, we allow our employees to understand the climate issues that the Earth is facing through education, and invite our employees to further consider what initiatives should be taken in response to such situation, coming up with actions from all around us that can show our love to the Earth.
"Climate Emergency," added to Oxford Dictionary's annual vocabulary in 2019 People in Taiwan may not be familiar with this term; however, 27 countries and 11,000 scientists worldwide have declared "Climate Emergency" a term. In addition, the Oxford Dictionary also listed this term in the annual vocabulary for 2019. The meaning behind it is no longer just about climate change. If we do not take urgent actions to remediate related issues, we will soon face irreversible global environmental damages.
UMC's green actions in response to climate emergency An international declaration is taking place. More than 11,000 scientists have made the declaration, and the people in Taiwan should not be absent. This is also the reason why UMC joined the "Climate Emergency Joint Declaration Action” organized by the Taiwan Environmental Information Association, B Lab Taiwan and Greenvines.
UMC has long been practicing environmental protection, mitigating climate change, and continuing to promote comprehensive green actions. Here are our commitments: 1. Green production: - Low-carbon energy saving and the concept of circular economy were introduced into our production processes. - Continue to improve the efficiency of energy use and purchase high-efficiency greenhouse gas reduction equipment. - Promote green supply chain and work with value chain partners to save energy and reduce carbon emission.
2. Green working environment: -Implement environmental education for all employees with an average time of more than 4 hours per person, and regularly organize environmental protection experiencing activities. -Promote and encourage employees to realize a comprehensive green life. -Fully promote document digitization, set up water-saving and energy-saving facilities to reduce the consumption of natural resources.
3. Green public welfare: - Continue to organize the "Eco Echo Award" to support NGO ecological conservation actions. - Continue to offer assistance to the disadvantaged/social welfare groups through the UMC "Energy-Saving Service Team", which enables them to enjoy a convenient and energy-saving life.
The above declarations are contributions made by all UMC employees to the sustainability of the environment. This year, in addition to implementing green life actions, we also put our green commitments into practice, turning these actions into habits, and blending them into our everyday life.
