On a Saturday morning in April, a group of students visited UMC’s Southern Taiwan Science Park fab (Fab 12A). UMC colleagues took time out of their busy schedules to share interesting experiences from their careers, helping the students understand more about the workplace and prepare for their future careers.
In early 2021, the UMC Science and Culture Foundation received a letter from a social worker from World Vision Taiwan’s Tainan office. They wanted to arrange visits to companies in different industries for students who are facing career decisions. The purpose is to help young people take “walking tours” of different enterprises to learn more about future possibilities.
In 2005, UMC launched the Spreading the Seeds of Hope program, hoping to enhance the competitiveness of Taiwan’s talents through the power of education. Through this event, the hope is for UMC to play a role in helping disadvantaged youths plan their careers and empowering them to forge their own paths.
More than 20 UMC volunteers participated and a series of workshops were arranged, inviting Fab 12A staff from different fields to share their stories. Members of Fab 12A’s Music Aficionado Club also gave a performance, demonstrating to the students that it is possible to pursue personal interests outside of work.
On the day of the event, volunteers gave a tour of the work environment and held group discussions, allowing the students to interact with UMC staff and to witness the actual workplace of a semiconductor company.
Three UMC staff – Li Chih-yueh, Chou Shang-nan, and Tsai Wan-ting – gave presentations to the students, sharing their philosophies, careers, and personal experiences. Through these sharing sessions, volunteers not only introduced UMC’s workplace culture to World Vision Taiwan youths, they also connected and learned from their UMC colleagues at the same time. To wrap up the visit, UMC’s Music Aficionado Club gave a wonderful performance and shared their experiences on maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

After the event, the Foundation received a letter of appreciation from the students, expressing their gratitude to UMC, which has inspired many volunteers. UMC will continue to work with youths and give them the tools they need to create their own paths and future.
