UMC helps suppliers cut emissions and achieve a lowcarbon supply chain

At this year’s supplier summit, held in November, UMC’s supply chain partners including GlobalWafers, PDMC, Merck, Applied Materials, and KLA joined us in declaring our commitment to drive decarbonization in the supply chain. Encouraged by the enthusiastic participation of more than 200 suppliers, UMC is confident that we can achieve the goal of 20% reduction in overall supply chain emissions by 2030.

As a global semiconductor foundry firm, UMC understands that our responsibility extends beyond our immediate stakeholders, and that we have the capability to leverage our influence and resources for the greater good. One example of this is our initiative to assist suppliers with building their emissions inventories and setting an emissions reduction pathway by providing tools and resources at no extra cost. UMC is investing close to NT$100 million in this program, which we hope will help at least 500 suppliers complete their inventories by 2030.

Climate change has long been an area of focus for UMC, and we are active participants of many global sustainability initiatives. In 2021, UMC became the first semiconductor foundry globally to commit to a net-zero emissions target, which we aim to achieve by 2050. As part of our net-zero journey, our reduction targets have also been validated the Science Based Targets

initiative (SBTi).

Back in 2017, UMC launched the "Triple R League" program, which promoted reduced consumption and the reuse and recycling of resources in the supply chain. As a result, the program facilitated a total reduction of 409,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent over three years. Led by SC Chien, UMC’s President and Chief Sustainability Officer, the company recently launched “Triple R 2.0”, which will support suppliers in completing their greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and setting emissions reduction goals.

Achieving this goal will not be easy and cannot be done alone. At the supplier summit in November, Louis Hsieh, UMC’s associate vice president of operations support, quoted the well-known African proverb in his message to suppliers: "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together." He emphasized that UMC will do its best to provide resources through an external consultancy and share its experience for the supply chain’s net-zero transition. In closing, he added, “We’re all in the same boat. Only by working together as a team can we win this war against climate change.”
