UMC Goes Live with Its "MY UMC" eSERVICE Solution
First Known Foundry Internet Application to Enable Real-Time Online Capacity Booking

Hsinchu, Taiwan -- October 23, 2000 – UMC (NYSE: UMC), a world leader in semiconductor foundry services, has announced the availability of My UMC, a new industry standard for web-based supply chain management applications. My UMC (http://my.umc.com) represents a significant enhancement to UMC's foundry services, allowing customers to use any standard Internet browser to access the technical and logistical data they need to bring their semiconductor products to market as efficiently as possible. My UMC is a secure environment that can be accessed by UMC foundry customers.

The application features UMC's Available to Promise (ATP) system, an industry first. ATP allows customers to reserve manufacturing capacity over the Internet in real time, reducing order confirmation lead-time from days to just minutes. The My UMC web portal also gives each customer a personalized start page that serves as the gateway to a comprehensive range of logistical and technical product information. Not only does this enable customers to track their foundry products through every step of the manufacturing process, but they can also use the online tools available in the portal's Engineering Data Analysis section to enhance product yield.

Robert Chin, director of IT at UMC, said, "We have developed a system that will bring our customers a new level of convenience. My UMC is a one-stop solution offering customers the ability to access comprehensive account information, as well as execute complex functions, such as product yield enhancement and capacity commitment, online and in real time."

My UMC has been developed in cooperation with many of the premier companies in the supply chain management field, including i2 Technologies.

"Only by working with the leaders in the field have we made such a comprehensive and scalable application available to our customers today," stated Jim Kupec, senior vice president of worldwide marketing and sales at UMC. "We recognize that our customers' time-to-market objectives require that they have easy and complete access to their account information 24x7. My UMC provides this information in a format optimized to meet the individual needs of each of our customers."

About ATP

UMC's ATP fab capacity loading engine allows customers to receive capacity availability information and instant capacity commitment in a real-time, Internet-enabled environment. The ATP system eliminates both unnecessary manual key-in operations and the potential for human error in the capacity commitment process. UMC is the first foundry in the world to make available this type of tool to its customers.
