Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C.- December 13, 2000 - United Microelectronics Corporation (TAIEX: 2303, NYSE: UMC) In response to recent market speculation regarding an investment project by the Company in Singapore, UMC confirmed today that it is engaged in advanced negotiations concerning a possible investment in Singapore, but also noted that there can be no assurances as to whether a transaction will be completed. The Company also said no further comments will be made until a transaction is announced or discussions are terminated. The Company has scheduled a public announcement to take place in Singapore on Friday, December 15, at 10:00 a.m. Notes to Editors UMC is one of the world's largest independent semiconductor foundries and a leader in advanced process technology.
