Dr. C.T. Lee Joins UMC as Vice President of Corporate Marketing

Hsinchu, Taiwan, March 11, 2002 - UMC (NYSE: UMC), a world leading semiconductor foundry, today announced that Dr. C.T. Lee has joined the company as vice president of Corporate Marketing. Dr. Lee, a semiconductor technology expert, will be responsible for overseeing UMC's corporate marketing activities as well as helping to develop the company's worldwide marketing strategy. Dr. Lee will report directly to Dr. Fu Tai Liou, Chief Officer of World Wide Sales and Marketing at UMC.

Dr. Liou commented, "We are happy to welcome Dr. Lee aboard UMC's corporate marketing team, as his rich knowledge and experience in the semiconductor industry will be a strong asset to our company. We are confident that his addition to the UMC team will help UMC to consolidate its position as the world's leading foundry for advanced technologies."

C.T. Lee received his B.S. degree in Physics and M.S. degree in Applied Physics from Taiwan's National Tsing Hua University. He later earned his Ph.D degree from Stanford University in Materials Science and Engineering. He was also a staff member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Laboratories where he led research related to Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology. Dr. Lee brings with him over 10 years of marketing and sales experience in the IC industry, and has worked for high profile companies such as AMD and TSMC. In addition, he was director of marketing and sales for United Integrated Circuits Corporation, a joint venture foundry company founded by UMC in conjunction with 6 leading North American IC design houses in 1996.
