UMC Wins Global Views Monthly 2011 Healthy Workplace Award

Taipei, Taiwan, ROC – May 10, 2011 - United Microelectronics Corporation (NYSE: UMC; TWSE: 2303) ("UMC" or "The Company"), a leading global semiconductor foundry, today announced that it has received the 2011 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Healthy Workplace Award presented by Global Views Monthly (GVM). UMC was the only Taiwanese company to receive this award among over thirty candidates spanning the technology, finance, manufacturing, and service industries.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary last year, UMC believes that active and healthy employees are the cornerstone of an enterprise's sustainable growth. As such, UMC set forth a comprehensive plan to build a healthy work environment that encompasses the physical and mental health of employees as well as their development within a nurturing environment and organization. The plan combines an effective foundation, extensive thinking, and concrete action to provide UMC employees with a high-quality work environment that enables all employees to grow and develop with the Company.

Moreover, to help employees prioritize their health, UMC has named May 20th, the Company's anniversary, as Employee Health Day, leveraging the Company's resources to help employees work toward 5 action goals, develop at least 2 healthy habits, and achieve zero negative impact on health. In addition to giving each employee a pedometer as a reminder to exercise more often, UMC will also award XBOX 360, Wii and other motion-control gaming consoles to employees who achieve exercise targets.

Through these activities, UMC hopes to encourage healthy habits.
