UMC Among Highest Ranked in Corporate Governance Evaluation for 9th Consecutive Year

Hsinchu, Taiwan, April 28, 2023 - United Microelectronics Corporation (NYSE: UMC; TWSE: 2303) ("UMC"), a leading global semiconductor foundry, today announced that it has achieved outstanding results in the 9th annual Corporate Governance Evaluation conducted by the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) and Taipei Exchange (TPEx), which once again ranked UMC in the top 5%. UMC is one of eight firms to be awarded this honor every year since the implementation of the Corporate Governance Evaluation in 2015 by the two local exchanges, recognizing the Company’s commitment to corporate governance and sustainable development. A total of 1,662 companies were reviewed in this year’s assessment, with 46 TWSE and 37 TPEx listed firms selected for the top 5% ranking.


UMC continually strives to enhance its corporate governance, such as ensuring the protection of shareholders’ rights and interests, strengthening the structure and operation of its board of directors, increasing information transparency, and promoting sustainable development. As an example, the Company has taken steps to increase the diversity of its board of directors to boost effectiveness. UMC’s board is composed of nine directors with a range of professional backgrounds, with over half of the board seats held by independent directors. The Company also leads the semiconductor foundry industry in Taiwan for gender equality on the board, with two female directors.


UMC has been recognized by various domestic and foreign institutions for its commitment to sustainable development, including the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI). The Company has been listed as an index component in the DJSI for 15 consecutive years, and achieved the highest sustainability score among semiconductor foundry peers. In addition, UMC has issued non-financial annual reports for 22 consecutive years to enhance communications with stakeholders regarding sustainability-related information. Since 2008, UMC is also one of the few companies to be recognized every year in the Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards.
