UMC Employee Care 2.0 - A 360-degree employee care program covering everything from prevention, tracking, to disability care

"One-stop shop" normally refers to a business model in which a company aims to fulfill all its customers’ needs. At UMC, we apply this approach to employee health. UMC offers the industry’s first 360-degree employee care system, which covers disease prevention, health tracking, and even disability care, assuring employees that they will be looked after in the case of unfortunate illnesses or accidents. In addition, the “One-Stop” e-platform has significantly improved the care system’s efficiency in comparison with the previous manual approach. Through the platform, employees can view all of their personal health information, and the company can also provide timely support to employees 100% of the time.
Healthy employees are the most important asset for a company. We firmly believe that UMC exists because of our employees, and employees in good health are crucial to the company’s sustainable development. In 2020, UMC activated the Employee Care 2.0 Program, a comprehensive approach to healthcare management and a pioneer in the industry. The program aims to give employees maximum health support through three major pillars, which are Disorder/Burnout Prevention, Health Tracking/Care, and Serious Illness/Disability Care,

With respect to preventive care, in addition to the annual health examination required by regulations, diversified preventive and screening activities such as cancer screening and flu vaccinations are also offered. Moreover, attention has been paid to the issue of burnout since 2015 as required by relevant occupational safety regulations. The company has adopted a variety of approaches, such as encouraging employees to proactively take leave, organizing outings and inter-fab competitions, and providing massage services offered by visually impaired masseurs to help employees attain a work-life balance.

For health tracking, UMC stores all personal health information in a digital health management system designed for the effective compilation of employees’ personal health information and electronic management.. Dedicated personnel are assigned to track health anomalies, and arranges doctor visits for those who may require medical attention. Doctor consultation results are imported into the system, which facilitates scheduling of follow-up examinations, regular tracking of index changes., and maintaining complete records of employees’ health status. The system serves as a channel between human resources and employees, and has greatly increased efficiency in managing employee health.

For employees who are unable to work due to sudden illnesses, financial support for serious illnesses and disability medical care payments have been added to the care system. Employees can receive financial support in a timely manner if they are hospitalized for more than one day. For serious illnesses for which ICU hospitalization is required and lasts for 7 days, a support of NT$60,000 will be offered. For cases where disability occurs due to any serious illnesses, support payments will be offered within three years from the onset of disability if the cases are judged to be eligible by attending doctors based on Barthel Index or CDR (Clinical Dementia Rating) Scale. The support is also available for employees’ families, contractors, and business visitors based on the disability’s severity.

For deceased employees, UMC simplified system in 2019 by reducing the processing time for bereavement payment to 24 hours after the death is known to the company. By integrating and standardizing the procedures, the families of deceased employees can receive financial assistance in the fastest time possible.

In one case, an employee suffered a stroke, resulting in disability. UMC was able to provide financial assistance quickly, which supported the employee’s family during the difficult time. Moreover, other colleagues also stepped in to raise money for the family, helping reduce the financial burden caused by medical bills.

UMC takes a proactive approach to employee health by focusing on the prevention of health risks, such as measures to help employees better alleviate stress. Families of our employees can also rely on the company to provide support when in need. We strive to build a caring workplace that prioritizes the health of employees, because, ultimately, a company’s long-term growth depends on its people.
